In addition to road construction, Connecticut can boast of other major construction projects that utilize rental equipment such as the Bridgeport Harbor Yard Amphitheater in which scissor lifts, excavators, boom lifts, and trenchers were used. The project which has been eight years in the making will be open for the upcoming concert season.

Hoboken has undertaken the construction and implementation of a massive flood management program along the Hudson River. This multimillion-dollar flood control, water, and sewer system will reduce flooding along the coastal areas with a four-part plan: Resist, Delay, Store, and Discharge. The Resist portion alone is a 230-million-dollar project headed by “Rebuild by Design-Hudson River.” As funding becomes available, the other three portions of the plan will be implemented by the City of Hoboken and partners such as the North Hudson Sewage Authority. Virginia has become one of the states with a hot housing market. The increase in new home, condo, and apartment startups is partially due to historically low interest rates, but COVID has fueled the desire for larger living spaces with more versatile and larger outdoor areas. Homes are no longer just a place to cook and sleep but have become home offices, school classrooms, gyms, entertainment centers, and home theaters.

With millions of white-collar employees transitioning to work-from-home the search is on for larger homes with separate office spaces, room for students to attend online schools, indoor and outdoor exercise areas, and home theaters. Homes are now small communities within themselves. This change in lifestyle makes it possible for families to move to cities and states where taxes are lower and housing is more affordable without changing jobs and in some cases schools.

Charleston, South Carolina did not believe libraries were a dying breed when they passed a 108.5-million-dollar referendum to build five new libraries. However, these centers of learning are much more than the traditional book stacks and shushing librarians. The fourth of five libraries to be completed, the Bees Ferry West Ashbury Branch, is a state-of-the-art 20,000 square foot facility complete with traditional reading opportunities plus a learning lab, equipped with computers and technology classes.

“Old meets new” with a story room but also a creative studio complete with craft supplies. The Bees Ferry Branch serves a population not covered by other branches and their opening was met with much enthusiasm from the surrounding population.

In addition to the innovations incorporated into the modern libraries, the pandemic has brought back recreational reading. I guess even the worst things have some good in them. Just when our kids have become completely engrossed with electronics, the ancient art of reading for fun reemerged.
